Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer ShawlThe Prayer Shawl Ministry is part of an international movement that provides the message of God’s love and grace through Prayer Shawls to recipients in need of comfort and support. The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets once a month at our church to pray and to knit for those who have a need from our ministry. It may be an illness, a loss, or a celebration that prompts the shawl maker to begin. The Prayer Shawl is accompanied by prayers as it is created and then delivered to the recipient. A Prayer Shawl is a soft, warm shawl—either knitted or crocheted—and is a reminder that you are loved by God and that our church family is lifting you up in prayer. Prayer Shawls are found in Old Testament references and were used during worship and private prayer times. Today, our Prayer Shawls are symbolic of God’s presence in our lives and the prayers of our church family that surround you.

“For you formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13

These shawls are created as gifts of love. They are of different colors and the patterns are simple. They may be made as a gift for someone in need that will be given at the right future time or as a special shawl for a particular person you know who needs this blessing for their life now. Those who receive shawls are uplifted and given solace as the love of God fills their souls.

The Prayer Shawl ministry meets once a month at the church. There are several ways to be involved: You can join our group and knit or crochet a shawl. You can share the name of a friend or loved one who is in need of God’s blessings. Contact Maureen Carr (828) 253-3316, ext. 320 or anyone in the shawl ministry. You can support the ministry through gifts of yarn or with monetary gifts. You can donate a new handmade shawl. Leave the shawl, along with your name, at the reception desk at the church.

4th Thursday morning of each month (with some exceptions) at Room 305 at 10:00 a.m.

If you would like to be part of this group but don’t know how to knit or crochet, someone in our group will be glad to get you started.

Prayer Shawl Outreach

Do you like to knit or crochet?

Is it hard for you to purchase yarn or attend a meeting?

Central’s Prayer Shawl Ministry is open to all who knit or crochet regardless of any limitations - financial, transportation, homebound…  You probably know that the ministry provides shawls of comfort for those    going through a difficult time. Our expanded outreach program looks like this:

a. Bags of yarn can be provided by the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Patterns and needles may be included as needed.

b. Simply contact Anne Frick to request the above.

c. A Prayer Shawl member will deliver the supplies or, if you prefer, leave a kit in the office with your name on it.

d. You begin with a prayer for the recipient.  The blessing continues throughout the creation of the shawl.

e. You work at your own pace.  There is no time pressure to produce any quota of shawls or use any particular pattern or yarn. You are encouraged to be creative.

f. When a shawl is completed, call Sam or Marie for a pick-up and blessing.

If you would like to serve the Lord in this way, you may discover the blessing is for you.
