Good Friday - Gabriel Faure's Requiem

March 30, 2018 @ 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary

The service will be a presentation of Faure’s Requiem, presented by the Chancel Choir and Orchestra and Organ, woven with the Passion Story in the Gospel of John. Childcare will be provided for this service.

Described as a “lullaby of death,” the Requiem of Gabriel Fauré will be woven together with the passion story from the Gospel of John as we commemorate Christ’s death in this Good Friday Service.

Fauré composed the work in the late 1880s and revised it in the 1890s, finishing it in 1900.  Composed in seven movements, the work is scored for soprano and baritone soloist soloists, mixed choir, orchestra and organ.  Different from typical Requiem mass settings, the full Dias irae sequence is omitted and replaced by its final section Pie Jesu. The final movement In Paradisum is based on a text that is not part of the liturgy for the Mass of the Dead but rather takes place after the “mass” has ended during the Service of Absolution.

In Fauré’s own words, "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest."
